What are the Marijuana Use and Purchase Regulations in The Donovan?

On October 17, 2018, recreational marijuana (cannabis) use, possession, and purchase became legal in Canada. Each province has its laws governing the purchase and use of marijuana.

Who May Purchase It?

To purchase, consume, possess, and grow recreational marijuana, you must be at least 19 years old. The use of marijuana among children is illegal.

How can I purchase it?

The Donovan Cannabis Store will let you purchase up to 30 grams (or one ounce) of dried recreational marijuana for personal use. You can do this online or in person.

The only locations that can legally sell cannabis for recreational use and adhere to the rigorous regulations set by the federal government are Casa Bliss Cannabis Sudbury and designated retail locations. It will still be illegal to purchase it from anybody other than the establishments that have received official approval. Each municipality in The Donovan is free to choose whether or not to allow retail establishments in its city or town and where they should be located.

What Are Some Uses?

You are permitted to carry up to 30 grams (or one ounce) of dried marijuana on you at any time if you are found in possession of marijuana in public.

It can only be utilized in:

  • a private home (either yours or someone else's), including the garden (for example, a porch or back yard)

  • If you reside in a multi-unit building, such as an apartment or condo, you may smoke within your unit or on your balcony (subject to your building's laws or your lease agreement).

  • various open-air public spaces (parks, sidewalks)
